The NiteFinder was a favorite amongst Nerfer Modders for many years and, if you find one, it would still be a great choice today. But, the Firestrike is the Elite variant that we have today. Modding the Nerf Firestrike early on will familiarize you with Nerf Modding basics like air restrictor removal and spring replacement. You can also add a coupler for even more power.
The Nerf Retaliator is a fun blaster of which to learn the inner workings. Like the Recon before it, you can start off with basic mods like the air restrictor removal and the addition of a stronger spring, but you can also perform slightly more advanced mods. You can add an aftermarket pump grip or you can go all out and try to add the slam-fire tech to this blaster.
Modding the old Nerf Longshot is like a rite of passage in the Nerf Internet Community (N.I.C.). It's easy to mod because there's lots of room inside and you have a large plunger tube to work with. You can learn air restrictor removal, removal of internal locks, adding a BEEFY spring, throwing on a pump grip, etc. OR you can get deeper and add a brass breech with tightening rings.
If you've modded all of those spring-powered blaster and are feeling overconfident, why not jump into modding a battery powered blaster? If you're going to re-wire a blaster, there's no better blaster to start with than the Nerf Stryfe. Modding this blaster is simple and very straightforward. Not to mention super fun. Throw in an IMR battery, some new flywheels and motors, and maybe a voltage meter and you're good to go!
If you try to mod the Nerf Stryfe and you're successful, you'll more than likely fall in love with rewiring Nerf blasters. If you're really ready to challenge yourself, clear out your next few afternoons and grab a Nerf Rapidstrike. The Rapidstrike, unlike the Stryfe, is fully automatic. Full auto means the Rapidstrike has an electrical dart pusher that will need rewiring in addition to everything else. And just wait until you start thinking about select-fire on this bad boy.
There you have it, the top 5 Nerf Guns to Mod! You can, of course, mod whatever blaster you see fit, but... these blasters are a rite of passage on your Nerf modding journey. You can switch out the Firestrike for the NiteFinder, you can switch out the Retaliator for the Modulus Recon, don't skip the Longshot, you can switch the Nerf Stryfe for the Nerf Modulus or the Nerf Demolisher (or any of the other Stryfe based blasters), and you can probably switch the Rapidstrike for the Nerf HyperFire or the Nerf Modulus Regulator if you want an even bigger challenge. As always, remember to stay safe by wearing the proper protective equipment and asking for help if you need to use any kind of cutting device or any power tool you're not familiar with. And as Rob would say, wear clean undies.
